Once you determine and overcome your inner boundaries, you are able to see the variety and
multitude of possibilities that lie in front of you.
The Brief
Conceptualize and create an installation for an annual event in the designerwerkschau in Munich, using light and glass as the main material.
As rather open and short briefing, this gave a huge space for exploring and designing.
The Concept
After exploring different ideas, our team focused on the topic of boundaries. What are they? How can we overcome them? Our approach was rather philosophical as we concentrated on the origin of any boundary: our inner self. What are boundaries lay inside of us? How can they be visualized? What can visualize the overcoming of a boundary?
Light represents the pure inner will you need to overcome your obstacles. Colour is the tool in the installation to capture the individual boundaries but at the same time show with colourful reflections which beauty lies in variety. The fence as the base of the installation remains the structure and beholds a brutal element, which represents the effort or struggle overcoming boundaries can be. It is also a reference to physical boundaries.
Additionally, we wanted the installation to be interactive, so it is an experience rather than a product to look at. For communicating the event and the installation alike, we also set up a social media concept with branded posts to teaser the topic.
Overcoming a boundary with light and colour to see what beauty lies in variety.
After researching we defined 5 most common inner boundaries. Each was allocated to a colour, having in mind the output when light would create a reflection.

The Prototype

The Result
At the event each person had to pick at least one boundary in form of a coloured acrylic sheet, which then should be hung into the fences. Because of the installed light, every fence reflected its colours differently. The more people decided to overcome their boundaries, the more colourful the reflections became. The variety of overlays and reflections grew even wider as people continued to interact with the installation.
People wanting to overcome their inner boundaries
created variety and overlays without boundary.
At the end of the event, we could even see which was the boundary people at this event wanted to overcome the most: fear.

Prior to the event Instagram stories were posted on the account of the designerwerkschau. They each consisted of a picture visualizing the one inner boundary and a teasing question, both coloured in the allocated colour.
